How does the settlement calculation work?
The calculator works out the total spent, divides it fairly based on who benefited from each expense, then calculates the minimum number of payments needed to settle all balances. Rather than everyone paying everyone else back individually, it finds the most efficient way to settle up with the fewest transactions.
What if not everyone benefited equally from an expense?
For each expense, you select which people it should be split between. This means a dinner that only four of six group members attended can be split just among those four, while accommodation shared by everyone splits across the whole group. Getting this right for each entry is the key to a fair final split.
Should we settle up during the trip or afterwards?
Most groups find it easiest to log expenses as they happen and settle up once at the end, using an app like this to avoid the awkwardness of chasing small amounts throughout the trip. For longer trips, settling weekly avoids one person carrying a large balance for an extended period.
